Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become involved with SBA?

All University of Houston Law Center students are automatically “inactive” members of SBA. For “active” membership benefits like event discounts, register for membership on the “Join SBA” tab.

What does SBA do besides planning social events?

Beyond our social events and programming, SBA serves as the student government organization of the Law Center, advocating for student interests and concerns with the Law Center administration. For more information, check out our Governing Documents.

What should I do if I am interested in being a mentor or mentee for SBA’s mentor program?

The ‘Adopt-a-1L’ Mentoring Program managed by our Speaker of the Assembly, begins each fall semester and lasts until the end of the academic year. Sign-up details are distributed annually at the beginning of the fall semester.

1Ls also automatically receive a student and faculty mentor through the UHLC Group Mentorship Program. While SBA assists with sourcing student mentors for this program, it is not operated by SBA.

How do I know if I have an active SBA membership?

The SBA Active Membership List is regularly updated by our Communications Director. For the latest information, contact sba@central.uh.edu or submit a Feedback form.

What kinds of events does SBA plan?

SBA hosts one primary social event each semester, Halloween Bash in the fall and Barrister’s Ball in the spring, sometimes endearingly called “law prom”. We also hold smaller events including our popular Bar Reviews, professional experience panels, community service events, intramural sports activities, and much more.

How do I become an elected official in SBA?

SBA holds elections for all Class Representative positions early in the fall semester and elections for Executive Board positions between March and April. Associate Board positions are appointed by the newly elected Executive Board in May. For more information, check out our Elections page or contact our Executive Vice President.

How can I stay connected and get updates about SBA?

All current Law Center students will receive regular updates about SBA activities via their CougarNet email. For more up-to-date information and smaller updates, we encourage you to follow us on social media. You can find our Linktree here.

Who do I contact if I have a concern I want to bring to SBA?

In addition to the ‘Feedback‘ form, it is recommended that you contact our President so they can assist you directly or connect you with the appropriate parties.
